The stacking ladder: mbo-4 into hbo, hbo first year into university, or stop at a 2-year Associate degree
Legal doorstroom rights let you climb: an mbo-4 diploma gives the right to enter hbo; finishing just the hbo first year (propedeuse) gives access to university; and you can stop at an Associate degree - a full, recognised 2-year hbo qualification - instead of a 4-year bachelor. Some hbo programmes set extra conditions for specific mbo backgrounds, and numerus-fixus studies still select; university admission via hbo needs the propedeuse, not just enrolment.
