You can refuse a shift you were told about too late
On an on-call or zero-hours contract, your employer must call you in at least four calendar days in advance. If they call you later than that, you are allowed to say no, and refusing is not a reason to be punished for it. If they cancel a shift within those four days, they still have to pay you for it.
